City of Atkins Mayor’s News – Parks are open!

Meet the Mayor is Canceled until later notice!

Atkins Public Works

The City of Atkins is replacing or updating many traffic and road signs in the City. Some residents may have flags in their yards, please leave the flags and call City Hall if you have questions. City Hall is 319-446-7870.

The City of Atkins wants to remind everyone to keep up on yard maintenance. We want to keep this City looking great. Please keep your grass 6 inches or shorter. Please keep sidewalks and street edges free of debris, weeds, and grass clippings.

Weeds have also been a concern recently. Please make sure to keep your yard weeded and looking nice. Please be aware of weeds along fence lines, and property boundaries.

Sump Pump Drainage

Nearly 13 miles of sanitary sewer extends underground beneath our city. Typically, this system of sewers transports wastewater from homes and businesses to the Wastewater Treatment.

During times of wet, rainy weather a unique problem presents itself. “Illegal water” is discharged into sewers, which may already be operating at near or full capacity, which causes sewage backups.

Atkins City Code does not allow groundwater that is collected in sump pumps to be deposited into the City’s system of sanitary sewers. This “illegal” problem regularly presents itself in Atkins. Citizens may contribute to their own or to their neighbor’s sanitary sewer back-up problems from such illegal connections.

Sanitary sewers were not designed to accommodate the volume of water generated by subsoil drainage systems. An expensive overload can occur.
