The City of Atkins has three boards and commissions, the Board of Adjustment, the Library Board of Trustees, and the Planning & Zoning Commission. Those interested in serving the community are encouraged to apply. Applications are available HERE.
Zoning Board of Adjustment:
The Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) consists of five members, each to be appointed by the Mayor, with Council approval, for a term of five years. The ZBA hears and decides appeals and reviews any order, requirement, decision or determination made by the Zoning Administrative Officer and the enforcement of the City Zoning Code.
Library Board of Trustees:
The duty of the Library Board of Trustees is to have general charge of the City’s library, and to establish appropriate rules and regulations for the management, operation, and use of the same as provided by state statutes. The Board shall appoint a librarian and have supervisory authority over all employees of the library.
The Board of Trustees of the Atkins Public Library is made up of seven (7) members appointed to respective six-year terms.
Planning & Zoning Commission:
The Planning & Zoning Commission has the duty to make and adopt plans for the physical development of the city and “review authority” within two miles of the city. The commission is a recommending body to the city council. Subdivision regulations have been adopted to provide for harmonious development of the city and its environs, for the integration of new subdivision streets with other existing or planned streets, for adequate open spaces for traffic, recreation, light and air, and for the distribution of population and traffic in a manner which will tend to create conditions favorable to health, safety, convenience, or prosperity.
Zoning regulations have been adopted to serve the public health, safety, and general welfare of the city and its two mile surrounding jurisdiction, to classify property in a manner that reflects its suitability for specific uses, to provide for sounds, attractive development within the city and its two mile jurisdiction, to encourage compatibility of adjacent land uses, to protect environmentally sensitive areas, and to further the objectives of the Comprehensive Development Plan for the City of Atkins.
The City of Atkins Planning and Zoning Commission consists of five (5) members who are citizens of the City of Atkins. Members are appointed by the City Council for terms of five years.
